Oral DNA Testing

DNA Testing for Oral Cancer/Periodontal Disease

DNA testing has given medical and dental sciences a significant push forward in understanding, detecting, and treating serious chronic diseases. At Lawson Family Dentistry, we utilize oral DNA testing to gain an advantage over oral cancer and periodontal disease, significantly improving your chances of successful treatment.

OraRisk® HPV

One of the most common risk factors for oral cancer is HPV, and OraRisk® HPV allows Dr. Lawson to measure that risk. OraRisk® HPV is a saliva-based test that determines if the HPV virus is present. The results of the test will help determine if you’re at an increased risk for oral cancer due to the virus. If the test results are positive, you may need to attend more frequent exams at our office.

Periodontal disease is a leading cause of adult tooth loss as well as increased risks of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and more. While it can affect nearly anyone, some people are genetically more susceptible to gum disease, inflammation, and jawbone loss. MyPerioID® is a saliva-based DNA test that measures your proclivity for severe gum disease to better plan preventive maintenance.

If you’ve already developed gum disease, then your treatment will be tailored to your unique needs and preference. To more accurately design your treatment plan, Dr. Lawson can utilize MyPerioPath®, which is a DNA test that helps determine the severity of your disease and the nature of the infectious oral bacteria responsible. MyPerioPath® helps Dr. Lawson more accurately treat severe gum disease, especially for patients who don’t respond well to traditional periodontal maintenance.

Stay ahead of changes in your oral health by taking advantage of oral DNA testing. To learn more, or to find out if you can benefit from one or more tests, call our dental office in Urbandale, IA, today at 515-278-4366.
