Children are just as susceptible to cavities as adults, if not more so due to difficulty many have properly brushing and flossing. In order to safeguard smiles against cavities, we may recommend preventive treatments. Will dental sealants and fluoride treatments help protect your children’s smiles?
Frequently Asked Questions About Sealants and Fluoride Treatments
Question: When do you recommend preventive care?
Answer: During a checkup, we look at our patients’ smiles to assess their risk of developing serious oral health issues, or to find the presence of these issues. For children, if we see signs of decay, or if they are young enough to have difficulty reaching the back teeth, we may recommend preventive treatments.
Question: How do dental sealants work?
Answer: The sealant is a plastic coating that covers the back teeth. These are often hard for kids to reach when brushing and flossing, allowing food to remain trapped between them and increase the risk of tooth decay. The sealants prevent this and will wear away with time.
Question: What does applying fluoride involve?
Answer: We will apply fluoride in a varnish to the teeth, the process only taking minutes. The fluoride then strengthens the outer enamel, improving the teeth’s defenses against cavities. Remember, fluoride is also in tap water, so be sure your kids are drinking plenty of water!
Question: How should kids care for their smiles from home?
Answer: At home, your kids need to be brushing their teeth twice a day and flossing once. For babies and young toddlers, you can brush and floss for them. For older toddlers and kids, you can supervise to make sure they’re cleaning their teeth correctly.
